ION is the most popular international sport. Originally developed in Japan, it is characterized by its use of bright, fluorescent colors that contrast against the darkness that usually pervades a match.
The object of the sport varies with each of the four ION challenges, but the same ball, called an "Ionosphere," and the same height of platforms stood on by the players are used. The same distance from the front edge of each platform is also used. The regulation platform height in competitions is 15m (or about 45-50ft), while the regulation distance is 10m (or about 30ft).
Singles ION is similar to tennis, but rackets and nets are not used. The object of Singles is to score points by hitting the Ionosphere against the backboard of the field. This can be achieved through throwing the sphere, kicking it or generally hitting it with any part of the body. The most difficult part of ION is being able to hit the ball with enough force for it to hit the opposite side's scoring pad.
Players are given a platform 5m long, by 2m wide to run across and deflect or hit the ball across to the opposite side.
Falling off the platform gives your opponent 3 points, but the deliberate attempt to cause your opponent to fall is illegal and will allow your opponent the opportunity to score three foul shot at your back board.
The Ionosphere glows the color of the last person who touches it. The score pad will only register a touch if a color different to it hits it. For example:
Player 1 is green, while Player 2 is orange. Player 1 hits the ball...
TBC....
